Releasing Players When you release a player, he will be placed on Waivers for 48 hours. If someone decides to pick him up off the waivers they will absorb his contract, and the team who cut him will no longer be responsible for his contract. However, if the player is not picked up off waivers within 48 hours, the team who cut him is responsible for paying his contract until it expired. If a team picks the player up after the 48 hours, the team who cut him is still responsible for paying his old contract.
Buyouts If you buyout a player you agree to pay 50% of the average salary of the remainder of his contract. For example, If you wish to buy out Miggy, and his contract has 3 years left with him making $15.04 Million per year. You would buy him out for $7.02 Million.

50% of 15.04 is 7.54... lol So with this, the idea is that if you think someone else wants him, you can try to just cut him and then not pay if someone gets him. But if you think nobody wants him, you cut him and just pay half, right?
